Reading.

A noble act that has been celebrated and lauded through generations by the greatest of greats. And their testimony is hardly an unfounded one; the lives of those great figures in human history are true testimonies by themselves. Indeed, books have been the media for exchanging and sharing ideas and emotions between minds since human history was recorded, and they help us to develop critical reasoning and appreciation for the beauty of language and storytelling. Books are one of the few good things that humans have got for themselves.

Even in the 21st century, books are considered as an essential element in living a content and worthwhile life. However, reading has become one of those things that "we should do but we don't and feel guilty about." Our century is one that is defined by its breathtaking speed and incredible inter-connectivity, which tend to keep us on our nervous toes rather than stretch out on the couch with a book in hand. There is simply not enough time, and too much distractions for us to read in peace.

Is that such a bad thing as it sounds? Reading is surely a beneficial and enlightening thing to do, but this shouldn't mean that it trumps everything else in terms of desirable behavior for intelligent beings. Reading has been the most worthwhile way to spend one's time for the past millennia, much because of the fact there were nothing else worthwhile to do. But in our time, there are as much new developments that deserves our time as there are distractions; portable music, the moving picture, internet (if put to good use), rapid transportation that allows us to meet people that we would have never met without, etc. These are experiences that I believe are worth as much as reading is.

Time being such a scarce resource now, maybe we should look back on the time we allot to reading, and whether reading is worth the time. Or better, we should think about which book is worth the time and which is less so. When I decided to read The Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, and realized that it was as lengthy as it was engaging, I began to consider whether I should spend so much time on this book. I watched the movie instead and had a satisfactory experience in a significantly shorter period of time. Obviously there would be some "subtleties" and "details" of the novel that the film won't be able to cover, but would they be really worth the time?

The feeling of loss is worse with reading non-fiction. I read books that contain points and message of enormous value that I am so glad to have encountered, yet I can't help feeling that all this good stuff could be condensed, with unnecessary details cut out, and still have the same impact of the original text (obviously there are exceptions with which it would be a sin to alter it in any way). Wouldn't it be a good idea to make more use of book reviews? Surely, reading the book review instead wouldn't match the experience of reading  the whole book, and I would be reading the book with someone else's rather than my own; but still, we're talking about trading 10 minutes for 10 hours.

What Borges said about Paradise rings true with my thoughts; in an ideal world, time would be limitless and I wouldn't have to bother about the opportunity cost of reading a certain book. But given the time constraints and other things that require our attention, we need to be more prudent with what we decide to read. As important books are to "being human," their value is not absolute, certainly not in the 21st century. We need to discern the books that we should read in its entirety, and books that we that we can approach more lightly. Time is more golden than ever.
