Outlier - 명사

While I was reading the book, it struck me that the title of the book was quite inconsistent with its content. To summarize, the book argues that to succeed, one definitely needs hard work, but one also needs a good environment, like family background and the generation one is born in. That is, you need luck to really succeed. This means that you don't necessarily succeed just because you are especially talented or especially hardworking. Those people who succeeded were especially lucky.

One of the successful stories that we think of often is that of Bill Gates. Surely, Gates had exceptional memory and an unmatched interest in computers from his early days, but would these have been enough to make him into what he is now? Reading about his early days, we can see that he should thank his good fortune (and in fact, he does). The prep school that he attended owned a computer that universities found difficult to afford at the time. Even Bill Gates would have ended up as a so-so figure if he didn't have a computer to practice his skills on.

We have seen countless scholars in the field of "success" who have come and gone; the people who give us hope by saying "I lived like this and this, and I succeed. You should probably try it too." We look up to these people and make them our life models, but according to Gladwell, following the lives of successful people doesn't necessarily make you successful. That is, there is no "equation" to success, as the field of success assumes. So don't be disheartened if you can't reach the top when the others have. Success is something "given" when hard work and luck come together.

Despite all this, I closed the book halfway through. Gladwell indeed made a good argument, but it was an argument repeated over and over again with excess examples. Also, that good argument is, in a way, quite obvious. Success, and even life, has no one correct answer.
