It was with great delight that I picked up a book called "Moral Clarity" in a library since its table of contents and the first few pages seemed to talk about morality and ethics in terms that made a lot of sense to me. Reading the book turned out to be a perplexing experience though. I could easily sense that this book contained invaluable information on its subject, and the author did a brilliant job of making philosophy actually readable. However, the subject being morality, it was still hard to follow, and there were so many important points everywhere that I eventually lost my way.

In short, the problem was that although some parts of the book stimulated me to come up with some brilliant insights on morality, but the book being so rich in content, I couldn't quite make sense of the whole book. This happens often when I read academic books, and I feel really horrible because firstly you spent so much time tackling the book (3 weeks for this book) but feel that after all the hard work, you don't quite know what the author is trying to say to you, and secondly because I know there is something precious in the book, yet I can't actually get to it.

This is what I think happens. It was really difficult for me to read more than 30 pages of these kinds of books a day since the reading requires me to give serious thought to its every pages. Naturally, I have to read it over a long period of time, and when I get down and try to write a book review on it, I realize that I forget the inspirations of thought that the book had given me weeks ago.

This doesn't usually happen with non-academic books. I can understand them easily enough, read them quite quickly, and grasp the book's central issue. So I just read them, sometimes with a help from some post-it notes, and write up a review. However, I came to think that academic books require a different approach. It would be similar to what I would do in a college course: read chapter by chapter, understand it fully, write something on it, and move on to the next chapter. After I have wrote on every chapter of the book, I would be able to remember the important contents of the book and come up with a wholesome review.

This, I imagine, would be quite time consuming, but I simply cannot go on reading books and feel shit about not understanding it well enough. I wonder whether I am the only one who forgets what one reads so easily, or whether I am not alone.
